Remember When?

Ave Maria:-)

Time flies ..but this is crazy..is it really Holy Week soon? 5 decades plus+plus:"> blushing on this jolly ole'planet and as a Catholic..let's see:-/ confused..born , raised.. dyed..immersed, ironed..hahaha .. if God had other plans..maybe allowed me to be born in Tibet and be a Buddhist or a communist that would have happened:> smug.but this is it for me, have fallen in love with the Catholic faith appreciating the spiritual wealth it yields -- this without losing respect for God's revelation to other denominations... how wise the Lord is to not allow one group to have a monopoly of the Holy Spirit;) winking You are mighty Lord.
Where was I?   Have had countless opportunities to discern..weigh, re-think..should I remain Catholic ..or will I grow closer to the Lord ..love and serve Him more if I transfered..maybe be Baptist or be a committed member in some other denomination?

Indeed God works in mysterious ways.. His ways and thoughts above ours..;;) batting eyelashes..
In the thick of the spiritual awakening ..the Lord helped me see..twasn't a question of whose church I belonged to .. but how  I have responded to God's invitation to grace. For even if from birth I be snatched away from my mother's bosum... placed in a convent , reared in the Lord's teachings by well-meaning monghas ... but if I resist... worst donot believe what is being preached..what good will it do to me..what changes if any will occur... It's the response that counts..and then the application in daily life till our last breath.

And this is why we hear the age-old complaint.."Ano ba yan , lamang-loob ng simbahan , pero napaka-itim ng ugali..parang walang Diyos sa katawan? paraphrased ( " I just don't understand it.. this person practically lives inside the church, so active in service..yet it doesn't show in her character... what happened? "

All Christians ... and I'd like to venture hopefully ---> most Catholics give great importance to the celebration of Holy Week... in the liturgical calendar..it is one of the highlights if not the Highlight of All for it culminates in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

In yesteryrs.. no make it... as a young child.:) happy. was initiated in devout Catholic tradition, Holy Week was a holy week:) happy  -- you could say both Belgian sisters/teachers at St. Theresa's and my beloved mother Lydia  and grandmother Filomena helped us understand the very foundation of our salvation --- Jesus was Lord and Saviour , the Father's gift to mankind so alienated from God by sin--- back then people had a keen understanding of sin and its malice, its malevolent forms --- unlike in modern times where as Fr. Cantalamessa says (Vatican retreat master): " Man has  grown in arrogance..." where sin is no longer sin but interpreted as respecting human rights , etc... and what other lame excuses...:-S worried
Yes in earlier times the public had greater understanding and belief in Jesus life and ministry and how He suffered and offered His life for the forgiveness of our sins..how his resurrection assured those who believe in Him of new life, eternal life -- a life in intimate friendship with God.

Thank God for those years when it was a quieter environment -- twas' easier for people to be disposed to prayer and reflection -- there were no malls on every corner beckoning you to enjoy shopping, watching the movies.... eating..naku..pigging out:-& sick.. there were no jeepneys blaring the loudest music ... no celfons, ipads, laptops to seduce and get your full attention. ..not as many resorts to lure you to have aromatic massages on (yikes) Good Friday?? nakaka-iyak naman.
My goodness , there must have been only 3 channel networks..hehehe..and they would be off the air for sure on Holy Thursday ... or if they were on the air.. they would show religiousprograms to help set the mood.

How fortunate for those born in that era.. cgue matanda na kung matanda:P tongue ..but those were the days  when the whole populace was prayerful..perhaps in those days..Muslims and those of other faiths would regard us with greater respect -- because they would see the people in one spirit... reflecting on the Life, Passion, Death and Resurrection of our Lord. Some think Catholics are too transfixed on the Sufferings of Jesus -- that we should give greater focus on His Resurrection..  but it is not that we detract from the glory of Christ's Resurrection... it is instead following and imitating --gratefully understanding the Ways of Jesus --that without His suffering, his obedience, his humble submission to death--on a cross ... without that -- we don't have any GLORIOUS VICTORY to look forward to... It's either we accept All of Jesus , not just the parts of Him that we like.

Why then act as tho' it never happened? For it did happen that Jesus suffered for us..and He did explain why it must be so ... how then can we play " Let's skip this part..and fast-forward it.... to redemption, resurrection and victory"  .Oh my..that 's what we get for enjoying too much You Tube or DVD movies....  we can skip parts /commercials we don't like... BUT NOT SO WHERE OUR FAITH IS CONCERNED.NOT SO.

What shall we pass on to our children.. for sure our elders even if they were imperfect tried best to pass on the faith to us...so maybe our biological elders were not up to it... but as a people... we did help each other in the past to remain faithful to our calling in Christ.
And now it is our turn.. yours and mine.. and you  blessed reader.. could be the same age as me or one of the youth in our community..? it doesn't matter.. love for Christ knows no age. We simply serve Him. It is our turn to help others understand  our inheritance in the Lord.

All traditions, rituals..kneeling..praying till you nose-bleed amount to nothing..if it is not offered in love , and to understand the whys and wherefore's of it all.. if the expressions donot translate to greater love for God and neighbor - concrete...concrete.
I mean... can you imagine Visita Iglesia on Holy Thrusday..making the rounds of churches (panata) praying with family and friends -- and yet getting caught in fisticuffs or yelling matches with drivers at the over-crowded parking lots? hahaha.... peace, manO:-) angel

In closing last night was the Kumpisalan ng Bayan at Mt. Carmel.. Parish Priests of a diocese help each other... priests from religious orders also come.. the whole church is prepared.. lights dimmed... soft meditative music playing... you get to choose the priest to whom you would want to confess to... just the sight and company of other souls who want to be reconciled to the Lord is healing in itself. Come, let us not delay our return to the Lord. As the Holy Spirit gently leads us..we will be led to understand the different ways we have hurt others, even our self.. we will understand how we have turned our backs on the Lord..and we will be so sorry we did it.It is grace..it is God's love working in our heart. May we all have an opportunity to be reconciled to God... to reconcile with enemies -- that is not impossible... and to be embraced by JESUS.................................Semana Santa... we welcome you..... te mye:x lovestruck

The Purpose of Confession:

That reconciling of man to God is the purpose of Confession. When we sin, we deprive ourselves of God’s grace. And by doing so, we make it even easier to sin some more. The only way out of this downward cycle is to acknowledge our sins, to repent of them, and to ask God’s forgiveness. Then, in the Sacrament of Confession, grace can be restored to our souls, and we can once again resist sin.

What Is Required?:

Three things are required of a penitent in order to receive the sacrament worthily:
  1. He must be contrite—or, in other words, sorry for his sins.
  2. He must confess those sins fully, in kind and in number.
  3. He must be willing to do penance and make amends for his sins.

Why Is Confession Necessary?:

Non-Catholics, and even many Catholics, often ask whether they can confess their sins directly to God, and whether God can forgive them without going through a priest. On the most basic level, of course, the answer is yes, and Catholics should make frequent acts of contrition, which are prayers in which we tell God that we are sorry for our sins and ask for His forgiveness.
But the question misses the point of the Sacrament of Confession. The sacrament, by its very nature, confers graces that help us to live a Christian life, which is why the Church requires us to receive it at least once per year. Moreover, it was instituted by Christ as the proper form for the forgiveness of our sins. Therefore, we should not only be willing to receive the sacrament, but we should embrace it as a gift from a loving God.

How Often Should You Go to Confession?:

While Catholics are only required to go to Confession when they are aware that they have committed a mortal sin, the Church urges the faithful to take advantage of the sacrament often. A good rule of thumb is to go once per month. (The Church strongly recommends that, in preparation for fulfilling our Easter Duty to receive communion, we go to Confession even if we are aware of venial sin only.)
The Church especially urges the faithful to receive the Sacrament of Confession frequently during Lent, to help them in their spiritual preparation for Easter.

You Will Survive

Ave Maria :-)

Well the heat wave is in.. pavements so hot and if you weren't able to park your car indoors, be ready to  literally sizzle once you enter the car... But thank God we can turn to God's Word for both spiritual and physical refuge... physical? Yes...yesss, because God's Word soothes and strengthens us thoroughly... it's more refreshing than a glass of halu-halo or aromatherapy massages --these will soothe just our bodies.. but God's Word reaches our innermost self.. reaches wounded places that medicine can't minister to.. God's Word brings forth a peace and knowledge of God's love for us that grounds us -- so whether it's a heat or cold wave , we will survive:) happy ...hmmm kamusta naman  kayo?

Cannot let this day pass without sharing thoughts with e-mail family:) happy My late mother had her own list of favourite biblical passages  :Romans 8:28      And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose#-o d'oh!... This one is so useful on those days when things go wrong one after the other.. you're wondering what you ever did to invite such bad luck:-/ confused

and then there is Mama Lydia : Iday , iday (iha.iha): " Remember.. Obedience is better than sacrifice  1 Samuel 15:22
But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams....

Well , I would smile inwardly , chuckle and say : "Syempre naman [-( not talkingpabor sayo Mama iyong obedience:> smug... and what was her added phrase?? : "Obey first, ask questions later.!" And hey children actually took tothis adage in those days... muntik ko na masabi in that era, ha,ha,ha.
Oh those were the golden days when children would simply trust their parent's wisdom..never questioning their motives always believing parents had the children's best interests at heart. Nowadays... children will  accuse you just for raising your voice one decibel higher and then bring you to court .. or call 911 -- holler : :(( crying it's child abuse down here!!! ... Young ones  can put you under the microscope.. study the parent intently in case you are an alien trapped in a human body ready to devour them anytime... oh dear...what has happened?#:-S whew!

And to make it a trio  of fave biblical passages ---this particular  Lenten  gospel Mama Lydia would quote whenever she wanted to exhort us on the joys of serving the Lord  without reservations:
 Luke 6:38 "Give and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you."

It's so nice in Tagalog...preachers would repeat :"siksik..liglig...."  In the beginning the words just sounded quaint.. they rhymed and sounded good ..very catchy too.. but as years passed by.. you'd see how the Word of God comes true again ..again and again...!

God the Father has devised the most impossible Math ever... He gave us The Best He had and that is JESUS His Son .. to repair all the wrongs we have done ..and when we say we..this is like every single human being who ever graced the planet earth until the last man born till the earth is no more.
But in this greatest subtraction ever, a supernatural effect follows... GOD ADDS , GIVES US BACK OUR LIFE AND INHERITANCE, OUR WHOLENESS AND HOLINESS.. OUR IDENTITY restored AS SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE MOST HIGH.O:-) angelIn this subtraction, where
Jesus lays His very life..and takes upon Himself cruelest punishment that should have been ours... this subtraction of life... grants us complete forgiveness of sins... the only way to recieve the Holy Spirit again.

By now if we donot know or realize how the Holy Spirit can affect us..the Mighty Spirit of GOD  multiplies countless times graces, gifts, healing and deliverance for the believer.  Through the Holy Spirit, "we move from glory to glory." As we have recieved the gift of the Holy Spirit  in our sacramental baptism..how wise to get to know Him and to allow the Spirit to mold us.

Mankind's math will always and forever be limited ...as limited as our human prowess can be.

But the Lord's math goes beyond our comprehension.:x lovestruck

In closing ..we have experienced this divine mathematics many times... many times.
Think of all those years that you have learned how to understand, to forgive the unforgiveable.. and to trust and allow your heart to love again... to kindle hope  even when all seems hopeless... to still find strength within you even when you think you are already half-dead from the hardships in life...
Whether you are a parent  or spouse.. a priest  or single for life..  you have had countless opportunities to love others....and it has never been easy.  To love those who love us back..that is pure pleasure.
But to extend kindness, exercise the highest tolerance... and when everything else fails ---- then to simply forgive and love as Christ would have done....  that is the purest math that God has lent us and that we have learned to apply in real life.

As we grow older whether in years or in wisdom..we are awed by this capacity to love : it is hard to love addicts, abusive people... it is hard to care for the sick and disabled .. for old Alzheimer ridden patients... to make sure that ungrateful, hardhearted loved ones will still have something to eat, a roof over their heads... tuition fee for school... it is hard to pray for the bad company (barkada) of our loved ones..those who have bad influence  and cause them to sin... yet we cannot outright pray this way : " Oh GOD let your fire fall>:P phbbbbt and burn this wretched person to a crisp."

We can't  just cave in that way.... there will be times that GOD would even ask us to pray for those who make life miserable for us... don't look at me:P tongue... It's GOD who thinks of these things:"> blushing... like I said His Math is weird.

In the end... we wonder if God makes sense. HE DOES.:) happy
For it is not evil that will conquer evil but goodness and God's love that will overcome evil...and in this,
CHRIST is victorious, now and forever!
Love in Action
9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited.
17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] says the Lord.20 On the contrary:
   “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”[e]

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

May we grow deeper in our knowledge and faith of Jesus Christ .. may we dwell on His Person, what He did..how He did it..and
Why He did it for us. May we learn from our Math Teacher - our Master, and may we pass His class;) winking Happy Lenten season to all....................................... God bless you... te mye:x lovestruck
